Mined Rubies: A Dirty Secret

When people think of conflict stones, diamonds are what come to mind.  Then other gemstones had their time in the limelight, such as jade, sapphire, and even silver and gold.  Though many jewelers would love you to think otherwise, rubies are no better than diamonds or other stones that are used to fund conflicts, regimes, and human rights atrocities.

Myanmar, formerly Burma, is one of the top suppliers of rubies around the world.  According to a report written by Global Witness, there is no such thing as an ethical ruby from Myanmar, as Myanmar’s mines fund a military government accused of genocide, conflict, and human rights violations.  Since 2021 when the Myanmar military overthrew the elected government, upwards of 1,200 civilians have been murdered by the military government, who finance themselves through ruby mines where civilians work in heinous conditions.

Like diamonds and other mined stones, Myanmar rubies change hands dozens of times before ending up all around the world, including the U.S., where they are sanctioned.  Unfortunately, big jewelers know this, and even after big companies have been caught buying rubies from Myanmar, there's been little to no press coverage on the matter.

But I Care!  What can I do?

If you're in the market for a ruby, we recommend buying a lab ruby.  Lab rubies are physically, chemically, and optically similar to mined rubies, and all for a much lower price!  If you buy from us, your purchase goes towards protecting our environment from heavily polluting industries with Carbon Lighthouse. There are also many other great companies out there doing great things.  Whatever you decide, we thank you for taking the time to inform yourself before making a purchase!
